Read All About It: We're engaged!

You’re engaged and you probably want to show everyone one you meet your ring, but with a lot of restraint you can still share your good news with the world, or at least your community. Place an announcement in your local paper and the papers in your hometown. It’s easy to do, just make a call to each newspaper’s lifestyle department and ask for the correct spelling of the lifestyle editor’s name. Then address everything to that person. Also, ask if there is a standardized form that can be mailed to you, if not, read the paper’s announcement section to get familiar with their style. You may want to mention the month of the wedding, but do not list your specific wedding date or your street address, doing so could invite unwanted guests… like thieves.

A photograph adds a nice touch to your announcement. To have one published ask what the paper's policy is for photographs; do they only publish wedding photos; or only pictures of the bride; do they prefer pictures of the couple; will they return the photo? Most newspapers require a 8 X 10-inch or 5 X 7-inch glossy. You should also ask if the photo should be in color or black and white.

Inquire about deadlines for engagement and wedding announcements. You may be able to give the information over the phone, or on-line. Some papers may charge a fee for running the announcement, so be sure and ask what charges may incur and how you can pay them.

If the paper does not supply announcement forms, type the announcement. In the upper-right hand corner type the name, address, home and office phone number of you or someone to contact to verify the information. Include the date you would like the announcement to appear. Note: Sunday is a popular day for wedding announcements and your news may not get in the paper; so consider typing: for release Monday, (date).

Protect your photo with a stiff piece of cardboard. Write your name, wedding date and phone number on a piece of paper then tape it to the back of the photo (writing directly on the back of the photo could damage it).

Here’s an example you can use if your news paper does not supply a standard form.
